If you follow me on instagram, {@lauraactonphotography} you will remember that I posted a few pictures last week of my trip to Colorado. I couldn’t go all the way to Colorado and NOT take my big camera, right?! Last fall we went to to check out the aspen, but this was a little bit of a different trip. For starters, we drove this time. The driving rotation was split up between me, my husband and my dad, so it wasn’t too bad. But wow, is Texas big or what?! I think 80% of the driver was just getting out of this huge state. My husband is heading back in the fall for an elk hunt, so we coined this as our “scouting” trip.

Once we got our first view of the mountain peaks, I knew the 14 hour drive was worth it. The wildflowers painted the landscape and the bubbling creeks were so serene. There is truly something so different about the sights, sounds and smells when you are in the mountains. If I could bottle all of that up, I’d be a very happy girl!

We saw a herd of about 50+ elk one day. They were making there way to their bedding area to sleep off the day, and honestly this was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. It’s so different to see these animals living out their day in their natural habitat. I didn’t have a very long lens with me, but you can kind of see them {the brown spots} in the picture below.

Two of them got separated from the herd, so we just sat and watched them for awhile.

Ever since Damon got his 4Runner, he has wanted to take it out on the dirt roads and mountain passes. He sure was happy when we made it there!

We also rented a UTV/Side by Side one day while we were in Pitkin. Now *that* is the way to get around! If you ever have the opportunity to rent one while in Colorado, I would highly recommend it. The suspension is so much better for the rocky terrain, and you can go so much faster!

This last image is one of my favorites. The clouds are perfect, and it looks like the mountains go on forever. I’m already looking forward to our next visit in just a few weeks!

What is one of your favorite places to visit?
